Can an MD not certified in ophthalmology write a perscription for eyeglasses?
Published by on Tagged VisionIs this legal? Would it be honored? The doctor in question is board certified in Internal Medicine and Oncology, not Ophthalmology, but provided he knew how and had simply lost his original perscription from his ophthalmologist, could he write his own perscription for eyeglasses/ contacts?

I would think it would be honored…if it is on a prescription pad with his name, ect…who would know he wasn’t qualified in that field
It’s just taken for granted that a Dr. wouldn’t write an Rx for something outside of his own field…but there is probably no laws against it.
You don’t have to be an opthalmologist to write an Rx for glasses.

An optometrist can write rxs too it does not have to be ophthalmologist.
An glassescontacts rx but dont see why person certified in internal medicine and oncology would be ophthalmologist.

In Australia medical practitioners are allowed to, although I’ve never heard of it actually happening. In fact even ophthalmologists hardly write glasses scripts any more, they usually send people to their optometrist.

An md will not venture onto things with which he is not familiar.
An md can do anything he wants if he believes it is not familiar.
